If you are an inactive
man or woman between the ages of 30 and 65 and would like to start a sensible,
slowly progressive program of exercise, here it
is! This is a year-long study designed to move you from the sedentary
blahs to fit and feeling great!
The study investigates
the effect of daily exercise on the factors that play a role in the development
of heart disease. It is not a program for individuals who have a history
of heart disease. Medical clearance from your personal physician is required
prior to registration. Tests include blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides,
additional blood components and percent fat as measured by underwater
weighing and skin-fold measurements. Other measurements include maximum
oxygen uptake, physical capability, body type (somatotype) photograph,
flexibility and strength, and the heart's response to exercise. For the
cardiovascular exercise portion, women will run or bicycle and men will
swim. Good swimming ability is not necessary, but you should be able to
swim at least one width of the pool (45 feet).
The program starts
at a low level of intensity and progress weekly. When it takes 20 years
to get out of shape, it is impossible to expect to get into good physical
condition in 20 days. Time is needed to develop physiological fitness.
A 70% attendance is requested and insures that you will not exercise beyond
your capability.
